CANTIÑA. F. [From Ga / /. Cantiña.] Generic name of a series of cheerful and lively songs, as the caracoles. The mirabrás, romeras and alegrías, all of them usually short ballads and often related to represent the old jotas de Cadiz. "Alegrías, cantiñas or juguetillos as Demófilo called them, in 1881, are capable of doing to resurrect the dead and do palillos to dance and lift the mood of deep state of sadness that plunges into a polo or a seguidilla when well sung by a gypsy. A world of colour, grace and rhythm - Jose Blas Vega has written, which will have an important role, especially in the nineteenth century, in the creation of the Flamenco style. A clearly gaditano song, framed rhythmically with touch of alegrías, where the alternatives are defined by the shade and tone basis where they touch each song, and where the reason or theme of the letters generally serve for giving them names ... These styles of songs to dance were essential in any flamenco party and began to be fashionable in song cafés, they formed the grace and joy of flamenco performances for many years, and its rhythm was made by the best El Mejorana, Gabriela Ortega, El Jeroma, El Macarrona .... Accompanied by the voices of the specialists: Macaca, Paco El Sevillano, Quiqui, Romero El Tito ... The versatility of its rhythm was very characteristic in the cantiñas, in any song (La caracola, El Prendero ...).pregón (La Frutera, La verdulera, La castañera ...) or political anthem (El Trágala, Riego, Torrijos ), inheritance from the 1820 revolution, with so much love to sing patriotic songs, it was assimilated. Something similar to how the bulerías developed in this century ... Of these songs we can distinguish in the present in practical use: alegrías (several styles), la cantiña, in itself (several styles), las romeras, el mirabrás and los caracoles. Other cantiñas of little use and at the point of disappearing are: la rosa, La contrabandista and el torrijos. "Between the cantiñas that still maintain their current validity are those of El Pinini, and the so-called singing of The Mirris. (See Alegrías, Alegrías por rosa. Alegrías de Coracha, Caracoles.
