      MARIANA. [Maríana, name to be mentioned in the chorus of one of the most popular lyrics of the songs that is called this, and which the gypsies called a monkey who were dancing to the beat of the tambourine; they sometimes gave the same name to a goat or other pets that also danced, or went up and down a ladder.]

A folkloric flamenco song, now almost disappeared, with a copy of long lines of various measures that concludes with a chorus. Its melodious cadence and tone seemed to show some link with the popular Andalusian songbook, the Gypsies later adapted it to the expressive tone of their wandering existence. Musically, in its flamenco version, introduced affinity with tientos, with a monotonous rhythm and a certain oriental resonance .

The popularization of this song, at the beginning of the century, is mainly due to El Cojo de Malaga, which was released as El Cojo de las Marianas, and El Niño de las Marianas, which resulted in his sobriquet. Later it has been appreciated by Bernardo el de los Lobitos, Jesus Heredia, Curro Lucena and José Menese in discs.
